In vertebrates, genome size has been shown to correlate with nuclear and cell sizes, and influences phenotypic features, such as brain complexity. In three different anuran families, advertisement calls of polyploids exhibit longer notes and intervals than diploids, and difference in cellular dimensions have been hypothesized to cause these modifications. We investigated this phenomenon in green toads (Bufo viridis subgroup) of three ploidy levels, in a different call type (release calls) that may evolve independently from advertisement calls, examining 1205 calls, from ten species, subspecies, and hybrid forms. Significant differences between pulse rates of six diploid and four polyploid (3n, 4n) green toad forms across a range of temperatures from 7 to 27 °C were found. Laboratory data supported differences in pulse rates of triploids vs. tetraploids, but failed to reach significance when including field recordings. This study supports the idea that genome size, irrespective of call type, phylogenetic context, and geographical background, might affect call properties in anurans and suggests a common principle governing this relationship. The nuclear‐cell size ratio, affected by genome size, seems the most plausible explanation. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common chronic lung disease and major risk factor for severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection among preterm infants. The Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is involved in oxidative injury responses in the lungs. Two non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms in the TLR4 gene have been associated with RSV infection in children. However, it is unclear to what extent this association is confounded by BPD or prematurity. In this study, we analyzed two population-based cohorts of preterm infants at risk for BPD as well as ethnicity-matched infants born at term, to test whether the TLR4 polymorphisms Asp299Gly (rs4986790) and Thr399Ile (rs4986791) are independently associated with BPD or premature birth. In a Canadian cohort (n = 269) composed of a majority of Caucasian preterm infants (BPD incidence of 38%), the TLR4-299 heterozygous genotype was significantly under-represented in infants without BPD (1.6% of infants versus 12% in infants with severe BPD) after adjusting for twins, ethnicity, gestational age, birth weight and gender (p = 0.014). This association was not replicated in a Finnish cohort (n = 434) of premature singletons or first-born siblings of Caucasian descent, although the incidence of BPD was substantially lower in this latter population (15%). We did not detect a significant association (>2-fold) between TLR4 genotypes and prematurity (p>0.05). We conclude that these TLR4 genotypes may have, at best, a modest influence on BPD severity in some populations of high-risk preterm infants. Further studies are warranted to clarify how clinical heterogeneity may impact genetic susceptibility to BPD.  相似文献

Recently extinct insular populations of oryzomyine rice rats (Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) are known from across the Lesser Antilles, but most remain undescribed. Historical records of a possible now-extinct endemic rodent from Barbados are supported by presence of oryzomyine remains in Late Quaternary sites on the island, including several pre-Columbian Holocene archaeological sites. The Barbados oryzomyine is described as Megalomys georginae sp. nov., and is most closely related to species from the nearby islands of Martinique and St. Lucia, M. desmarestii and M. luciae. These species all display a zygomatic plate with its posterior margin level with the alveolus of M1, a divided anterocone on M1, and distinct anterolophids and metaflexids on m2 and m3, and are recovered as a monophyletic clade in morphological-molecular and morphology-only analyses. The new species differs from other Megalomys species in having the labial accessory root of M1 absent, a reduced anteromedian flexus on M1, two roots on m2 and m3, a supratrochlear foramen on the humerus, and in its much smaller body size. Other extinct Caribbean oryzomyines are not recovered in a monophyletic clade with Megalomys.  相似文献

The structure of the galactan sulphate of P. lanosa has been established by a combination of methylation, treatment with alkali, and partial methanolysis of the alkali-treated polysaccharide to give derivatives of agarobiose. The polysaccharide belongs to the agar class, in which 3-linked derivatives of beta-D-galactose alternate with 4-linked derivatives of alpha-L-galactose in a repeating sequence. In addition to D-galactose itself, the 3-linked units include 6-O-methyl-D-galactose, D-galactose 6-sulphate, and a hitherto unreported unit, 6-O-methyl-D-galactose 4-sulphate. The 4-linked units include L-galactose 6-sulphate, 2-O-methyl-L-galactose 6-sulphate, and 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose.  相似文献
